Baron Hill, Beaumaris, Anglesey Baron Hill sits in an area of naturalised
woodland within extensive grounds. Commissioned by the Bulkeley
family, building work originally began in 1612, but apparently never
finished. A new house, enclosing the Jacobean style house, was
constructed between 1776-9. The house was surrounded by a
landscaped garden with views of Beaumaris Castle, the Menai Strait and
the mountains of north wales. Subsequent alterations were made in the
19th century, including a new entrance drive and lowering the main house
from three storeys to two. The house has been uninhabited since the
1920’s and it’s decline was accelerated when Polish troops were stationed
there during the second world war, leaving this magnificent house
overgrown and roofless by the early 21st century.
In 2007 Watkin Jones began negotiations with the owner Sir Richard
Bulkeley, to look at renovating the main house and surrounding stables
and outbuildings for residential use. Further to meetings with the local
authority planning department and the conservation officer and CADW
(Historic Environment Service of the Welsh Assembly) a scheme has been
devised that has so far had promising feedback from all. The scheme is
currently awaiting planning approval and listed building consent for this
building of great historical importance.
